Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) recorded their highest successful run chase in the 70th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on May 27.
The Super Giants posted a massive total of 227/3 in 20 overs, riding on Rishabh Pant’s second IPL century. RCB, having a long history of unsuccessful attempts in 200+ run chases, once again had an uphill task to chase a 228-run target.
Thanks to brilliant performances from Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, Jitesh Sharma, and Mayank Agarwal, who steered RCB to chase a mammoth target in just 18.4 overs.
As RCB secured its spot in Qualifier 1, let’s take a look at their three successful 200-plus run chases against different teams in IPL History.
How many times RCB chased 200 plus score in IPL?
Surprisingly, RCB successfully chased down a 200-plus total only thrice in the IPL history.
Apart from their recent win against Lucknow, the Bengaluru-based franchise previously achieved victories against Punjab Kings (in 2010) and Gujarat Titans (2024) while chasing a target above 200.
3 Most Successful 200+ Run Chases of RCB in IPL History:
Out of RCB’s 21 attempts in 200+ run chases, here are the three most successful and memorable moments as the entire batting line-up exploded to achieve a huge target against these teams:
1. 228 vs Lucknow Super Giants, IPL 2025
The 228 target is RCB’s recent highest-ever successful run chase against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium.
With a spot in Qualifier 1 at stake, RCB batters were under pressure to chase a gigantic total posted by LSG after Rishabh Pant’s unbeaten, devastating ton of 61-ball-118 runs, which included 11 fours and 8 sixes.
Also, this match witnessed Virat Kohli scoring 9,000+ T20 runs for RCB, which is the most by any player representing a single team.
Kohli, who scored a 30-ball 54 runs (includes 10 fours), maintained a fiery 61-run opening stand with Phil Salt (30 runs from 19 balls— including 6 fours).
After the chase master Virat’s dismissal, Bengaluru’s hopes of securing a top-two finish in the points table were completely shattered.
At 123/4 in 11.2 overs, the interim skipper Jitesh Sharma’s unbeaten 85-run knock revived his team from a tricky collapse. Additionally, the 31-year-old maintained an unbeaten 5th wicket partnership of 107 runs with Mayank Agarwal, who remained not out till the end and scored a 23-ball 41-run knock (includes 5 fours).
Overall, a dominating 6-wicket victory propelled RCB to conclude at the top two in league stages for the third time, after the 2011 and 2016 seasons, where they ranked as runner-up.
2. 204 vs Punjab Kings, IPL 2010
The 204 target was RCB’s previous highest successful run chase against Kings XI Punjab (currently Punjab Kings) in the 7th match of IPL 2010 at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium.
Manish Pandey provided a fabulous start for his team, scoring 38 runs from 26 balls (including 2 fours and 3 sixes).
However, these two-star performers made a significant contribution and stitched a 69-run partnership in a high-scoring run chase:
- Jacques Kallis: *89 runs from 55 balls (including 8 fours and 5 sixes).
- Robin Uthappa: 51 runs from 21 balls (including 4 fours and 4 sixes).
Finally, the Royal Challengers secured an 8-wicket victory against the Kings with 7 balls to spare.
3. 201 vs Gujarat Titans, IPL 2024
After 14 years, RCB recorded another 200+ run chase in the 45th match of IPL 2024 against Gujarat Titans (GT).
Faf du Plessis, as an opener scored a quickfire 12-ball-24 runs (including 1 four and 3 sixes) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, in Ahmedabad. Eventually, the match proved to be a one-sided affair as Virat Kohli scored a terrific 70 runs from 44 balls (including 6 fours and 3 sixes).
Ultimately, it was Will Jacks who stole the spotlight with his unbeaten 41-ball century (including 5 fours and 10 sixes) at a strike rate of 243.90. As a result, RCB chased the 201 target with a 9-wicket victory and 24 balls to spare.
Overall Verdict
Out of RCB’s 3 successful run chases in 200+ targets, Virat Kohli has amassed 50-plus scores twice in the 2024 and 2025 seasons each.
Also, it is to be noted that Bengaluru achieved two additional successful 200-plus runs chases in the currently defunct Champions League T20.
