IPL 2026 Auction: CSK’s Bold 28 Crore Strategy on Two Uncapped Youngsters Over Cameron Green

CSK Missed out Cameron Green

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction was nothing short of a surprise. All 10 franchises together spent a purse of INR 237.55 crore on December 16 (Tuesday), including several terrific additions to the squad.

Meanwhile, former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin mocked the lack of intent shown by the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) during the bidding war. The five-time champions took a shocking decision to let go of the Australian all-rounder Cameron Green to the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for a whopping total of INR 25.20 crore.

Green was one such unique talent who set a record of becoming the most expensive overseas player in IPL history.

Despite the risk factors, CSK invested INR 28.4 crore on two uncapped youngsters— Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma— each of them valued at INR 14.2 crore. The duo earned the tag of the costliest uncapped players ever in the history of the IPL auction.

CSK’s Wise Decision or Missed Trick?

Several factors, like the budget allocation, domestic key strategy, and building on long-term vision, motivated CSK to make a wise move to bank on the hidden gems for INR 28.4 crore:

  • Budget Management: CSK entered the auction with the second-largest purse of INR 43.40 crore after KKR (INR 64.30 crore) to fill out 9 vacant slots (including 4 overseas players). Investing INR 25.20 crore solely on fast bowling all-rounder Cameron Green would limit their strategy to strengthen other core departments.

  • Core Domestic All-Rounder: Following Ravindra Jadeja’s trade to Rajasthan Royals, CSK was keen to acquire a local all-rounder boasting the dual abilities of an orthodox spinner and a power-hitting lower-order left-handed batter. As Prashant Veer mirrors Jadeja’s skills, he emerged as the franchise’s top choice to maintain a perfect balance in the batting and bowling line-up.

  • Long-term Plans: Instead of heavily depending on high-profile overseas stars, CSK’s investment in uncapped talents like the spin bowling all-rounder Prashant Veer and wicketkeeper-batter Karthik Sharma covers all departments.

Uncapped Pair vs Proven Talent: Risks of Missing Out on Green

While CSK’s bold strategy is appreciable, the franchise might still regret missing out on Cameron Green:

  • Proven Talent: Cameron Green has been a match-winner in multiple formats. His explosive batting and pace bowling style could have easily fixed the imbalance in CSK’s middle order batting and fast bowling attack.

  • Huge Bids on Uncapped Players: Prashant and Karthik are the proven talents at the domestic level, but they have yet to prove their mettle at a competitive stage like the IPL. The uncertainty about the duo’s ability to adapt according to the league’s intensity adds pressure on them due to their high price tag.

Overall Analysis

CSK’s strategy in the IPL 2026 auction reflects a mix of a high-reward, high-risk approach.  Giving up Cameron Green for INR 25.20 crore may pose a question on their tactics, but the franchise was keen to bid on domestic youth to shape the squad for the next generation as well.

Finally, the forthcoming IPL season will reveal if the Super Kings’ bold decision was a master stroke or a missed chance, which entirely depends on how Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma rise to the occasion.
